Ubuntu Linux 6.06 LTSNo …. No .. don’t misread the title, this is a family-oriented blog [I hope so].

Since past few days I’ve been fighting [really] my a$$ out to install Ubuntu Linux [Drapper Drake 6.06 LTS]. And boy-o-boy am I glad Microsoft created Windows XP ! There is always one thing or another that just refuse to work.

First it’s setting up the HD partitioning & and painstakingly making sure all partitions get recognized.

Then the damn drivers for every damn thing, be it network card or Sound card or CPU drivers, one thing or other just kept on missing. Everything I’ve to reboot in XP, download the file and then reboot again into Ubuntu. Why ? Because damn network card drivers just won’t install so I was not able to configure internet.

So after a week & countless format of different partitions, I had given up. Until something better comes up which installs with less headaches I’m done with Linux.

I’m not passing a verdict on Linux or Ubuntu Linux, maybe others won’t have that many problems installing Ubuntu as much I had. These are just my thoughts. Or maybe I’m not classified as Human Being.

Ubuntu is by far the best Linux Distro ever. I started using it a month ago. then I had to switch over to windows since my dads applications doesnt work on linux. :D

As far as the installation was concerned it was pretty straight forward for me and almost everything worked after I installed Ubuntu, which was surprising since during my previous attempt my audio didnt work that was some other linux distro.

But only the installation was easy I didnt know what to do after that :D

@ neeraj: Dude, I am running an FC5 distro on my comp now. In my case though, Windows XP Professional wouldn’t install properly on my system, unless it’s an SP2 slipstreamed version.

Even then, it doesn’t detect my Fujitsu MVH2120BH SATA disk and hence can’t detect the partitions. :-D!!

However, FC5 went through the whole process in a breeze :-)! Xp rules as of now, but then there are certain aspects of Linux, which is endearing!
    - The thrill of actually installing every device in your computer/notebook is something you _have_ to experience :-)!

Anyhoo, aside from that, why don’t you try updating your whole Linux kernel thing? For e.g. with the concept of yum-update, everything in my system is a breeze to handle!

What’s better, with a kernel update even the system drivers get updated and my headphones port, which wasn’t detected @ first my Linux, was later detected and installed automatically when I updated to the 2.6.17-1.2187_FC5smp kernel. :-)!

Try giving Fedora Core 5 a shot :-)!

However for blissful installation, XP is the best. Gonna try out the Vista soon. I have just burn the RC1 and the Build 5728 DVDs. Will install it once I am sure that I know how to reconfigure GRUB back and get my Linux installations working as well!

@Rakesh … we are very much on the same platform. Even I didn’t knew what I would have done *IF* Ubuntu installation has worked perfectly.

@Guru, the biggest problem I face is the network card drivers not getting installed. As a result I was not able to setup my internet connection to troubleshoot other things.

Even I’m planning to try Vista, but for that I need to upgrade my internet connection to a decent level even to download the binaries.
