There have been subtle changes happening over at wordpress.com over past few days, Matt & Co are real busy alright. Changes that’s … that’s …. well see for yourself.
The Hmmm…
- “Links” tab in admin is now renamed as “Bookmarks”. Hmmm… sounds a good change.
- In “Write Post” page, “Categories” are now moved above “Discussion”. Hmmm… again sounds quiet convenient.
The Dunno !!
- “Bookmark Categories” are now merged with “Post Categories”. Sounds inconvenient ? Yes,
a littlequiet a bit! Dunno why this was done !
The What ???
- “Post Categories” don’t follow hierarchial structure anymore. WHAT !!! Yes, all the hard-work I put earlier went down the rabbit-hole. I believe this is done to support “WordPress categories are tags now” thought-stream.
No I am not skeptical to changes. But some of the changes are a little annoying. Specially, merging Bookmark Categories with Post Categories. Using Post Categories more as tags is fine, but it would be much more useful if it is merged with technorati/del.icio.us tags. What’s the use maintaining same tags for multiple services? Or am I missing something here !!
UPDATE13.April.2006
Today morning, while going through my other blog I noticed that the categorical-hierarchy is enabled again !!!
TAGS: wordpress . wordpress.com . blogs . blogging . posts . categories . bookmarks

The changes are more than “little annoying”, it’s ridiculous.
The change is horrible. All my links/ Blogroll are not visible on the home page of my blog . Though they are there in my Dashboard. PATHETIC.

Nidhi, there could be some problem with the theme you are using. Try changing to some other theme and then see whether your bookmarks showup or not. Or you can send Feedback to wordpress about the problem.
Dear Neeraj, Thanks for the advice. Yes, in new theme the blogroll are coming but I couldnt understand earlier on my previous theme the links were coming. Whatever, in new theme I am getting the links. Thanks once agian and I would send the complain in their feedback when I will get a time.
Hugs

That’s because some of the themes don’t support categories within the blog roll. Consequently, once the blogroll categories are merged with the post tags, they aren’t visible with some of the WP themes out there!!
I agree with you that some of them are annoying. However, the main idea is that once your posts and bookmarks follow the same category, it’s easier for the WordPress database to maintain ‘em.
Furthermore, your links as well as your posts are now aggregated by the various aggregators. So it makes links popular as well as your posts under the same category!!
!
I cannot controll which links I want to be displayed. Confusing enough.
JV, it seems they have removed the ability to toggle visibility from within “Manages Bookmarks” page.
Now to toggle visibility, click on “Edit” for that perticular bookmark and below “Categories” option you’ll see “Visibility” option on the right-hand side. There you can select “Yes/No” depending upon what you want to do.
Hope this helps.
