The first step has been taken towards giving more power to wordpress.com blog users. Today Matt announced WordPress Widgets on wordpress blog.
In his own words:
The widgets are basic right now, things like search, categories, pages, etc, but we’re going to be adding more based on your requests and we’re opening up an API for anyone to create their own widgets. (It’s as writing a single function and wrapping it in a WordPress plugin.)
What it means is, as of now, you can rearrange/add/remove “discreet blocks of goodness” in the sidebar [that is things like Categories, Archives, Links, Meta, etc]. And the best part is they will be opening up an API to enable the users to create their own Widgets!! KOOL !!
Though not all the themes that are currently available have the Widget. At the time of writing this entry following themes support the widgets:
So go ahead & enjoy the WP Widgets while I decide whether to put the Categories before Links or after Meta. See you on the other side !
